How Many Study Hours Does Each ACCA Paper Take?
Realistic study hour estimates for each ACCA paper to help you plan your preparation schedule.
The Honest Answer: It Varies Significantly
ACCA does not publish official study hour guidelines for individual papers, but experienced tutors and the student community have produced reasonably consistent estimates based on first-attempt pass rates and candidate experience. The numbers below are averages - your background, study style, and work context all affect how many hours you personally need.
Applied Knowledge Papers (BT, MA, FA)
Typically 60-100 hours per paper for candidates with limited prior accounting knowledge. Candidates with an accounting degree or A-level maths often need significantly less - some pass FA or MA with 30-40 focused hours. These are the foundation papers: do not underestimate them, but do not over-prepare either.
Applied Skills Papers
Most Applied Skills papers require 100-150 hours of structured study. TX and FR are at the higher end (120-160 hours for most candidates) due to the volume of technical content. FM is often cited as requiring 100-130 hours. AA typically needs 100-140 hours with a strong focus on question practice. LW can sometimes be achieved in 70-100 hours for candidates who learn well through reading.
Strategic Professional Papers
SBL is hard to quantify in hours because the preparation is different in nature - pre-seen engagement begins 10 weeks before the exam and the preparation is more about practice than content coverage. Most candidates spend 150-200 hours on SBL. SBR, AFM, AAA, and APM typically require 150-200 hours each. ATX (Advanced Taxation) is often cited as requiring the most content-heavy preparation - 160-220 hours.
Total Study Hours
A candidate sitting all 13 papers with no exemptions and passing each on the first attempt would typically study for 1,200-1,800 hours in total over 3-5 years. This is equivalent to roughly 6-12 months of full-time study spread across a working career.
