What Is the ACCA PM Paper?

Performance Management (PM) is the Applied Skills extension of the Management Accounting knowledge paper (MA). It goes significantly deeper into management accounting techniques, performance measurement frameworks, and strategic management accounting. PM is one of the more technically demanding Applied Skills papers.

Exam Format

PM is a 3-hour 15-minute written exam with two sections. Section A has 15 OT questions worth two marks each (30 marks). Section B has three 10-mark OT case question sets (30 marks). Section C has two 20-mark constructed response questions (40 marks). Total: 100 marks. All questions are compulsory.

Key Topics in ACCA PM

Specialist cost and management accounting: Activity-based management, target costing, lifecycle costing, throughput accounting. Decision-making: Relevant costs, pricing decisions, linear programming for multi-limiting factors. Budgeting and control: Beyond budgeting, rolling budgets, zero-based budgeting, advanced variance analysis including mix and yield variances. Performance measurement: Balanced Scorecard, Building Block model, divisional performance with ROI and RI, transfer pricing in multinational contexts. External influences on performance: Benchmarking, value chain analysis, PEST analysis applied to performance.

PM Pass Rates

PM has one of the lower Applied Skills pass rates, typically 40-52% globally. The range and depth of content, combined with the time pressure of constructed response questions, makes it challenging. Many candidates underperform in Section C questions by not applying concepts to the scenario given.

Study Tips for ACCA PM

Answer Section C questions by applying theory to the specific context — generic answers score poorly. Learn the technical formulas for variance analysis and linear programming. Practise Section A MCQs until all calculation techniques are fluent. Time management is critical — do not spend too long on any one question. Allow 12-16 weeks of part-time study.

FAQ

Is PM harder than MA?

Yes — PM is significantly more demanding than MA. It tests deeper technical knowledge and requires well-structured written answers under time pressure. Candidates who struggle with PM often have not fully consolidated their MA knowledge before attempting it.
