What Order Should I Take ACCA Papers?

ACCA has 13 papers across three levels — Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills, and Strategic Professional — plus an Ethics and Professional Skills module. The levels must be completed in sequence: you cannot sit Applied Skills papers until you have completed (or been exempted from) Applied Knowledge, and you cannot sit Strategic Professional until Applied Skills is complete. Within each level, however, the order is largely your choice.

This guide covers ACCA's recommended paper sequence, the rules you must follow, which papers build on each other and should be sat in order, and how to plan your route through the qualification efficiently.

The ACCA paper structure — a quick overview

Before planning your sequence, it helps to understand the structure. Applied Knowledge includes BT (Business and Technology), MA (Management Accounting), and FA (Financial Accounting) — all on-demand CBE with no fixed sitting dates. Applied Skills includes LW (Corporate and Business Law), PM (Performance Management), TX (Taxation), FR (Financial Reporting), AA (Audit and Assurance), and FM (Financial Management). The Ethics and Professional Skills module (EPSM) is an online module to complete before attempting Strategic Professional. Strategic Professional Essentials includes the compulsory SBL (Strategic Business Leader) and SBR (Strategic Business Reporting). Strategic Professional Options requires choosing 2 from: AFM (Advanced Financial Management), APM (Advanced Performance Management), ATX (Advanced Taxation), AAA (Advanced Audit and Assurance).

The rules you must follow: Applied Knowledge must be completed (or exempted) before sitting Applied Skills papers. Applied Skills must be completed before sitting Strategic Professional papers. SBL must be sat before, or at the same time as, the second Strategic Professional paper you attempt. The EPSM must be completed before the Oxford Brookes BSc degree can be awarded (if pursuing it), but does not need to be completed before sitting Strategic Professional exams.

The three Applied Knowledge papers can technically be sat in any order and are all available on demand. However, a logical sequence reduces difficulty.

Recommended order: BT → MA → FA

BT first. BT is the broadest and most conceptual of the three papers — covering business organisations, governance, the role of accountants, and professional ethics. It introduces the professional context for the rest of the qualification. It has the highest pass rate of any ACCA paper (~80%) and is the best starting point for new students.

MA second. MA builds on quantitative reasoning and introduces costing, budgeting, and performance measurement concepts that feed into PM at Applied Skills level. Sitting MA before FA means you are not simultaneously learning financial accounting for the first time.

FA third. FA introduces financial statement preparation under IFRS, double-entry bookkeeping, and the core financial reporting concepts that FR at Applied Skills level builds on directly. Passing FA with a strong understanding is important preparation for FR, which is one of the harder Applied Skills papers.

Many students sit BT and MA simultaneously — this is manageable given the on-demand format. Sitting all three simultaneously is more demanding and is not recommended for students new to accounting.

Applied Skills is where sequencing decisions matter most. The six papers have varying degrees of interdependency.

Strong dependencies to respect: FA → FR — Financial Reporting directly builds on Financial Accounting. Students who did not fully master FA consistently struggle with FR's consolidation and IFRS application questions. Pass FA with confidence before sitting FR. MA → PM — Performance Management builds on Management Accounting concepts and extends them significantly. Attempt MA before PM. TX → ATX — if you plan to take Advanced Taxation as one of your Strategic Professional optional papers, ensure TX is solid. AA → AAA — Advanced Audit and Assurance requires a thorough foundation in AA.

ACCA's recommended Applied Skills sequence: 1st sitting — LW + PM. 2nd sitting — TX + FR. 3rd sitting — AA + FM. This pairing groups papers that don't share significant content overlap, spreading the cognitive load across each sitting.

Practical adjustments: if you work in tax, consider sitting TX earlier — it maps directly to your day job. If you work in audit or practice, AA maps closely to external audit work. If you work in industry (management accounting/FP&A), PM and FM map closely to day-to-day work. LW can be sat at any point — it has the highest pass rate of the Applied Skills papers (~75–80%), does not depend on other Applied Skills papers, and can be used as a lower-intensity paper to sit alongside a harder one.

At Strategic Professional level, sequencing options are more constrained. SBL is the anchor paper — ACCA requires that SBL is sat before, or at the same sitting as, your second Strategic Professional paper. In practice, most students sit SBL first or alongside SBR.

Recommended approach: 1st sitting — SBL on its own. 2nd sitting — SBR + one optional paper. 3rd sitting — second optional paper. SBL is a four-hour integrated case study exam — the most format-different paper in the qualification. Students who have not experienced this exam format before often benefit from focusing entirely on SBL preparation the first time they sit Strategic Professional.

Alternatively, some students sit SBL and SBR together in their first Strategic Professional sitting, particularly if their work provides strong exposure to reporting standards. This is manageable — SBL and SBR have limited content overlap — but requires careful time allocation.

Choosing your optional papers: if you work in corporate finance/treasury/banking, consider AFM. If you work in management accounting/FP&A/controlling, consider APM. If you work in tax practice/advisory, consider ATX. If you work in audit/assurance/practice, consider AAA. Choose options that align with your career direction.

How many papers can I sit at once?

ACCA allows students to sit a maximum of four papers per year across all levels. Within a sitting, most students sit one or two papers. One paper per sitting is appropriate for students new to ACCA, students with very demanding jobs, or students attempting a harder paper. Two papers per sitting is manageable for students who have found their study rhythm and are sitting papers with limited content overlap. LW paired with almost any other Applied Skills paper is a common and sensible combination. Three papers in one sitting is rarely advisable.

The on-demand CBE format for Applied Knowledge and most Applied Skills papers means you do not have to wait for a quarterly session — you can sit these papers as soon as you feel ready.

Common ACCA paper sequencing mistakes

Sitting FR before fully mastering FA. FR is consistently one of the hardest Applied Skills papers, and a weak FA foundation makes it significantly harder. Take the time to pass FA with genuine understanding before attempting FR.

Sitting too many papers simultaneously. Two underprepared attempts produce worse outcomes than one well-prepared attempt. If you are unsure whether you can handle two papers simultaneously, sit one.

Leaving LW too late. LW is one of the more manageable Applied Skills papers and can be sat at any point. Students who save it for last sometimes find themselves unnecessarily delaying completion of Applied Skills when LW could have been cleared much earlier.

Not planning the EPSM. The Ethics and Professional Skills module must be completed before ACCA awards the Oxford Brookes BSc (if you are pursuing it), and it is a requirement for full ACCA membership. Students who complete all 13 papers but haven't started the EPSM delay their membership. Start it during your Applied Skills studies.

Choosing Strategic Professional options without considering your career. Students who choose optional papers based on perceived difficulty rather than career relevance miss an opportunity to build depth in their specialist area.

FAQ

Q: What order should I take ACCA papers? Complete Applied Knowledge papers (BT, MA, FA) before starting Applied Skills, as ACCA requires this. Within Applied Knowledge, the recommended order is BT → MA → FA. At Applied Skills level, respect the FA → FR and MA → PM dependencies. At Strategic Professional level, sit SBL first or alongside your second paper. Choose optional papers that align with your career specialism.

Q: Can I skip ACCA papers if I have a relevant degree? ACCA offers exemptions from some Applied Knowledge papers and certain Applied Skills papers to graduates with relevant degrees or professional qualifications. Check ACCA's exemptions tool on their website (acca.global) to see which papers you may be entitled to skip.

Q: Do I have to follow ACCA's recommended paper order? You must complete each level before the next. Within each level, the order is largely your choice. However, some papers build directly on others (FA → FR, MA → PM), and ignoring these dependencies makes the later paper significantly harder.

Q: How many ACCA papers can I sit at once? ACCA allows a maximum of four exam entries per year. Most students sit one or two papers per sitting. Two papers is manageable for students who have established their study rhythm and are choosing papers with limited content overlap.
