Malaysia is one of the strongest ACCA markets in Asia. With over 47,000 ACCA members and students in the country, a deep network of Platinum-approved tuition providers, and formal recognition by the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA), ACCA has become the go-to professional accounting qualification for Malaysian students and career changers alike.

Why ACCA Is Recognised in Malaysia

ACCA holds formal recognition at the highest levels of Malaysia's financial and regulatory ecosystem. ACCA and MIA have an active Strategic Partnership Agreement running until May 2027. Under this agreement, ACCA members who complete three years of relevant practical experience qualify for MIA membership — the designation of Chartered Accountant Malaysia (C.A.(M)). MIA membership is the statutory requirement to sign off audited financial statements in Malaysia.

The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) recognises MIA-registered accountants, meaning ACCA-qualified professionals with MIA membership can work in capital markets roles. Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) requires finance professionals at regulated institutions to hold recognised qualifications — ACCA via MIA membership satisfies this requirement.

ACCA Exam Structure

ACCA consists of 13 papers across three levels. Most Malaysian candidates with an accounting degree background bypass the first two levels through exemptions.

  1. Applied Knowledge (3 papers): Business and Technology (BT), Management Accounting (MA), Financial Accounting (FA). Entry-level foundation — typically exempted by local degree holders.
  2. Applied Skills (6 papers): Corporate and Business Law (LW), Performance Management (PM), Taxation (TX), Financial Reporting (FR), Audit and Assurance (AA), Financial Management (FM).
  3. Strategic Professional (4 papers): Two compulsory Essentials papers — Strategic Business Leader (SBL) and Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) — plus two Options papers chosen from Advanced Financial Management (AFM), Advanced Performance Management (APM), Advanced Taxation (ATX), and Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA).

How to Study ACCA in Malaysia

Malaysia has some of the best ACCA tuition infrastructure in the world. Key institutions with Platinum Approved Learning Partner status include Taylor's College (Subang Jaya), Sunway College (Petaling Jaya), HELP University, LSBF Malaysia, and UOW Malaysia KDU College. Total tuition fees for a full ACCA programme at a Malaysian college typically range from RM20,000 to RM33,000, excluding ACCA's own registration and exam fees.

ACCA Exemptions for Malaysian Graduates

  • Local accounting degree graduates from public or private universities are typically eligible for up to 9 paper exemptions — covering all of Applied Knowledge and all of Applied Skills. This means entering directly at Strategic Professional level and needing to pass only 4 papers.
  • STPM holders can register directly with ACCA with a minimum of 2Cs in STPM and 3 credits in SPM including English and Mathematics.
  • Diploma in Accounting graduates typically receive exemptions covering the Applied Knowledge level (3 papers), entering at Applied Skills level.
