ACCA MA (Management Accounting): Exam Guide, Key Topics and Pass Tips
What Is the ACCA MA Paper?
Management Accounting (MA) is the third Applied Knowledge paper and covers the use of financial information to support internal decision-making. Where FA focuses on recording and reporting historical financial information, MA focuses on using cost and management data to plan, control, and make decisions.
Exam Format
MA is a 2-hour computer-based exam with 72 objective test questions (46 two-mark, 26 one-mark). Pass mark 50%. Available on demand. Expect a mix of calculations and conceptual questions.
Key Topics in ACCA MA
Cost classification and behaviour: Fixed, variable, semi-variable costs; cost behaviour analysis; cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis and break-even analysis. Costing methods: Absorption costing, marginal costing, activity-based costing (ABC), job and batch costing. Budgeting: Preparation of functional budgets, master budgets (P&L and balance sheet), cash budgets. Standard costing and variance analysis: Setting standards, calculating and interpreting material, labour, overhead, and sales variances. Performance measurement: ROI, RI, divisional performance, and transfer pricing basics. Decision-making: Relevant costing, limiting factor analysis, make-or-buy decisions.
MA Pass Rates
MA pass rates are typically 55-70% globally. The variance analysis and limiting factor sections catch many candidates out. Calculation accuracy is important — careless arithmetic errors in multi-step questions cause unnecessary marks to be lost.
Study Tips for ACCA MA
Master the standard costing variances — they appear in almost every exam. Practice CVP and break-even calculations until they are automatic. Work through limiting factor and make-or-buy questions methodically. Allow 6-10 weeks of part-time study.
FAQ
Is ACCA MA harder than FA?
Many candidates find MA more challenging than FA because it requires more applied calculation skills and judgment on which cost information is relevant to a decision. Both are accessible papers but MA rewards candidates who practise calculation-heavy questions consistently.
