Everything You Need to Know About ACCA Exemptions

Many students are eligible for ACCA exemptions – but just because you can claim exemption doesn’t mean you should.

How Do ACCA Exemptions Work?

One of ACCA's biggest advantages is that you don't have to start from scratch. If you already hold a relevant qualification — whether that's AAT, a finance or accounting degree, or another professional body credential — you may be entitled to skip some of ACCA's papers entirely.

ACCA exemptions allow you to skip specific papers if ACCA recognises that your existing qualification covers equivalent learning outcomes. Exemptions are only available for the Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels — the first two stages of the ACCA qualification. You cannot get an exemption from any Strategic Professional paper. Those must be sat by every ACCA student regardless of prior qualifications.

Exemptions are not automatic. You need to apply for them through ACCA when you register, providing evidence of your qualifying credential. ACCA charges an exemption fee per paper waived (currently £84 per paper — check ACCA's website for the latest fee).

Which Qualifications Give ACCA Exemptions?

AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians)

AAT is the most common route to ACCA exemptions in the UK and Ireland. If you've completed AAT Level 4, you're typically entitled to exemptions from all nine Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills papers — meaning you can enter ACCA directly at the Strategic Professional level.

Typical exemptions for AAT Level 4 completers:

  • Business and Technology (BT) ✓
  • Management Accounting (MA) ✓
  • Financial Accounting (FA) ✓
  • Corporate and Business Law (LW) ✓
  • Performance Management (PM) ✓
  • Taxation (TX) ✓
  • Financial Reporting (FR) ✓
  • Audit and Assurance (AA) ✓
  • Financial Management (FM) ✓

Always confirm your specific exemptions with ACCA directly — exemptions depend on exact qualifications and grades achieved.

Accounting and Finance Degrees

Holders of accounting, finance, or business degrees from recognised universities may be entitled to exemptions from some Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills papers. The exact number depends on your university, degree subject, and specific modules covered. ACCA maintains an online exemptions calculator where you can enter your degree and university.

ICAEW (ACA)

ICAEW ACA holders are typically entitled to significant ACCA exemptions, covering most or all of the Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills papers.

CIMA

If you hold CIMA qualifications or are part-qualified CIMA, you may be entitled to some ACCA exemptions. Check with ACCA directly for your specific entitlement.

Other Professional Bodies

ACCA has exemption arrangements with CPA Ireland, CIPFA, ICAS, and various international accounting bodies. Use ACCA's exemptions database to check your entitlement.

How Much Do ACCA Exemptions Cost?

ACCA charges £84 per paper exempted (check ACCA's website for the current rate). If you're entitled to all nine Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exemptions, the total cost would be approximately £756. That's still significantly less than the exam fees and study time for sitting those nine papers.

Should I Claim All My Exemptions?

In most cases, yes — but it's worth thinking carefully for the Applied Skills papers.

If your prior learning is recent and strong, claiming exemptions makes clear sense. But some students find that sitting the earlier papers helps build a solid foundation for the more demanding Strategic Professional level.

This is particularly relevant for Financial Reporting (FR) — a paper that underpins much of what's tested in Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) at Strategic Professional level. Students who exempted FR sometimes struggle with SBR.

Our recommendation: Claim your Applied Knowledge exemptions confidently. For Applied Skills papers, consider your comfort level with each subject before deciding — especially Financial Reporting and Financial Management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get ACCA exemptions with an accounting degree?

Yes — holders of accounting, finance, or relevant business degrees from recognised universities are typically entitled to exemptions from some ACCA papers. The exact number depends on your specific degree and university. Use ACCA's online exemptions database to check. Most accounting graduates can claim between 3–9 paper exemptions.

Does AAT give you ACCA exemptions?

Yes — completing AAT Level 4 typically grants exemptions from all nine Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills papers, allowing you to enter ACCA directly at the Strategic Professional level.

How much do ACCA exemptions cost?

ACCA charges £84 per paper exempted (check their website for the current rate). You pay a fee for each paper you skip — but the total cost is significantly less than the exam fees and study time for sitting those papers.

Are ACCA exemptions worth it?

How do I find out exactly what exemptions I'm entitled to?

ACCA's website has an exemptions calculator where you enter your qualifications and see which papers you can skip. Always verify with ACCA directly before registering, as exemption rules can change.
