If you hold the ACA qualification from ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales), you're already one of the most technically qualified accountants in the world. ACCA recognises this fully — and grants ACA members the maximum possible exemptions, letting you enter ACCA at the Strategic Professional level with all foundational papers waived.

This guide explains exactly what ACA/ICAEW holders are entitled to, how the exemption process works, and what completing ACCA looks like from your position.

How Many ACCA Exemptions Do ACA Holders Get?

Fully qualified ICAEW members (ACA) receive 9 exemptions — the maximum available. This covers every paper at the Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels, meaning you bypass the first two stages of ACCA entirely.

ACCA LevelPapersACA/ICAEW Status
Applied KnowledgeBT, MA, FAAll exempt (3 papers)
Applied SkillsLW, PM, TX, FR, AA, FMAll exempt (6 papers)
Strategic Professional — EssentialsSBL, SBRMust sit (2 papers)
Strategic Professional — OptionsChoose 2 from AFM, APM, ATX, AAAMust sit (2 papers)

Result: As a qualified ACA, you need to pass just 4 papers to become a fully qualified ACCA member.

How Much Time Does This Save?

A student starting ACCA from scratch typically takes 3–4 years. With 9 exemptions, most ACA members complete ACCA in 12–18 months of part-time study — sitting the 4 remaining papers across 2–3 exam sessions.

Why Do ACA Members Pursue ACCA?

ACCA is the world's most internationally recognised accountancy qualification, with members in 180 countries. For ACA-qualified professionals, adding ACCA unlocks:

  • International mobility — ACCA is the preferred qualification in many markets where ICAEW has less presence, including across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa
  • Mutual recognition agreements — ACCA and ICAEW have a long-standing mutual recognition arrangement, making the conversion streamlined
  • Broader employer recognition — some international employers and clients specifically request ACCA alongside or instead of ACA
  • Career diversification — adding ACCA strengthens your profile for senior cross-border finance roles

What Are the 4 Papers You'll Need to Sit?

Strategic Business Leader (SBL)

ACCA's flagship case study paper. SBL tests leadership, strategic thinking, corporate governance, and professional skills in an integrated exam format. Unlike the ACA case study papers, SBL is open-book and scenario-based — most ACA professionals find it manageable given their experience.

Strategic Business Reporting (SBR)

Advanced financial reporting under IFRS, group accounts, and professional judgement in complex reporting scenarios. ACA members who have sat the ACA Advanced Stage Corporate Reporting paper will find significant overlap.

Two Options Papers (choose 2 of 4)

  • AFM — Advanced Financial Management: mergers, acquisitions, treasury, risk management
  • APM — Advanced Performance Management: strategic performance frameworks, big data, organisational models
  • ATX — Advanced Taxation: complex UK and international tax planning
  • AAA — Advanced Audit and Assurance: professional practice, assurance engagements, ethics

Most ACA professionals choose ATX + AAA (strong overlap with ACA Tax Compliance and Audit pathways) or AFM + APM for those in advisory or FP&A roles.

How to Claim Your ACA Exemptions

  1. Register with ACCA — complete your student registration at accaglobal.com
  2. Submit your ICAEW membership certificate — upload your ACA certificate or ICAEW membership confirmation in the ACCA portal
  3. Pay exemption fees — currently £83 per paper exempted (9 papers = £747 total). Payable within 30 days of exemptions being awarded
  4. Receive confirmation — typically 5–10 working days. ACCA will issue a formal letter confirming all 9 exemptions
  5. Register for SBL, SBR and your two Options papers — sittings are available in March, June, September and December

ACA vs ACCA: Do You Need Both?

Neither qualification is strictly required — both are globally respected and open senior doors. The decision usually comes down to where you want to work and with which clients. If your career is UK-focused and audit-heavy, ACA alone is sufficient. If you're planning international moves or working in markets where ACCA dominates, completing the conversion is a smart investment of 12–18 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the ACCA-ICAEW mutual recognition agreement still apply?

Yes. ACCA and ICAEW have a mutual recognition arrangement that facilitates the conversion pathway. The 9-exemption entitlement for qualified ACA members is formalised through this agreement.

Can ACA students (not yet qualified) claim exemptions?

Partial exemptions may be available depending on how far through the ACA you are. Fully qualified ACA members receive the maximum 9. ACCA's exemptions calculator will confirm what you're eligible for based on your current ACA progress.

How long does ACCA take after ACA?

Most ACA members complete ACCA's 4 remaining papers in 12–18 months studying part-time. Many sit 2 papers per session, completing in 2 sittings.

Are the ACCA Strategic Professional papers difficult for ACA holders?

Generally no — the depth of technical knowledge from ACA more than covers the underlying content. SBL requires adjustment to ACCA's open-book format, but ACA professionals consistently report finding the Strategic Professional level manageable compared to the ACA Advanced Stage.
