ACCA Entry Requirements: What Do You Need to Start?
One of the first questions people ask about ACCA is whether they're actually eligible to sit. The good news: ACCA's entry requirements are more accessible than most people assume. There's a standard academic route, a mature student route, and several pathways for people who already hold other qualifications.
Standard ACCA entry requirementsTo register through the standard route, you need:
- Two A-levels (or equivalent Level 3 qualifications) in any subjects, plus
- Three GCSEs (or equivalent) — including English and Maths at grade C/4 or above
You don't need a finance or accounting A-level — any subjects count. The key requirements are the English and Maths GCSEs.
Can I start ACCA without A-levels?Yes — if you're 21 or older, you can apply through ACCA's mature student route. ACCA considers your relevant work experience rather than academic qualifications. If you've been working in accounting, finance, or a related field, that experience can substitute for the A-level requirement.
To apply: register with ACCA, select the mature student option, provide details of your relevant work experience, and ACCA reviews the application.
Can I start ACCA with a degree?Yes — and if your degree is in accounting, finance, or a related subject, you may also be eligible for exemptions from some papers.
With any degree: You meet the entry requirements automatically and can begin at Applied Knowledge level.
With an accounting or finance degree: You may be entitled to exemptions from some Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills papers. Use ACCA's online exemptions database to check. Most accounting graduates receive between 3–9 exemptions.

Can I start ACCA with AAT?Yes — and AAT Level 4 is one of the most powerful entry routes.
With AAT Level 2 or Level 3: You meet ACCA's entry requirements and begin at Applied Knowledge level.
With AAT Level 4: You're entitled to exemptions from all nine Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills papers — entering ACCA directly at the Strategic Professional level, skipping to the final four papers. Instead of 13 papers, you sit just 4.
Do I need relevant work experience to start ACCA?No — you don't need experience to register and begin sitting exams. However, ACCA requires three years of relevant practical experience before awarding full membership. This is logged via ACCA's experience portal and typically gained through your job naturally alongside studies.
What if I don't meet any entry requirements? If you don't have A-levels, a degree, or AAT, and you're under 21, ACCA offers the Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) pathway — introductory accounting qualifications that feed directly into ACCA. Most working adults in this situation begin with AAT Level 2 instead, which is also a recognised entry route.
