What Is AAT Level 2?

The AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting is the entry-level qualification from the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT). It provides the foundation in bookkeeping and accounting that anyone starting a finance career needs. It is equivalent to GCSE level and is typically completed in 6-12 months of part-time study.

The AAT Level 2 Certificate covers: Introduction to Bookkeeping (covering double-entry, ledger accounts, and the principles of bookkeeping), Principles of Bookkeeping Controls (bank reconciliations, control accounts, the trial balance), Principles of Costing (cost classification, overhead allocation, contribution analysis), and The Business Environment (business types, legislation, and the role of finance in organisations). Assessment is through computer-based assessments (CBAs) for each unit.

Most students complete Level 2 in 6-9 months studying part-time (one evening per week plus self-study). Some students complete it faster - motivated full-time students can finish in 3-4 months. There is no time limit, so you can study at your own pace.

Registration fees to AAT, exam fees (typically 50-80 GBP per assessment), and tuition fees vary. Many employers sponsor AAT study. Self-funded study through an online provider typically costs 300-800 GBP for Level 2. Some government funding (apprenticeship levy) may cover costs if your employer is eligible.
