Not sure if you're ready for the full ACCA Qualification? ACCA's Foundation in Accountancy (FIA) is the entry-level suite of qualifications designed to give you a solid grounding in accounting fundamentals before stepping onto the main ACCA ladder. Whether you're starting with no formal qualifications or returning to study after a break, FIA is built to be your starting point.

What Is FIA?

FIA (Foundations in Accountancy) is a group of three progressive diplomas awarded by ACCA. They cover the core principles of financial and management accounting, business technology and related disciplines — at a level equivalent to the first year of a bachelor's degree. There are no minimum entry requirements to register.

FIA is sometimes referred to by its older name, CAT (Certified Accounting Technician), which ACCA used before rebranding the qualification to better reflect its role as the foundation for the full ACCA Qualification.

The Three FIA Qualifications

ACCA Diploma in Financial and Management Accounting (RQF Level 2)

The starting point for students with no prior accounting knowledge. Two papers:

  • FA1 – Recording Financial Transactions (80% pass rate, December 2025)
  • MA1 – Management Information (81% pass rate, December 2025)

ACCA Diploma in Financial and Management Accounting (RQF Level 3)

Builds on Level 2 with greater depth and complexity. Two papers:

  • FA2 – Maintaining Financial Records (73% pass rate, December 2025)
  • MA2 – Managing Costs and Finance (69% pass rate, December 2025)

ACCA Diploma in Accounting and Business (RQF Level 4)

The final FIA diploma, equivalent to the first year of a degree. Three papers:

  • FBT – Business and Technology (78% pass rate, December 2025)
  • FFA – Financial Accounting (69% pass rate, December 2025)
  • FMA – Management Accounting (66% pass rate, December 2025)

At each level, students must also complete the Foundations in Professionalism module — an interactive online module covering ethics and professional behaviour in finance.

FIA Specialist Certificates (Optional)

At Level 4, ACCA also offers three specialist certificates alongside the main FIA pathway:

  • FAU – Foundations in Audit (46% pass rate, December 2025)
  • FTX – Foundations in Taxation (55% pass rate, December 2025)
  • FFM – Foundations in Financial Management (49% pass rate, December 2025)

These are optional for the FIA qualification itself but valuable if you're planning a career in audit, tax or financial management.

How FIA Leads to Full ACCA

The most important benefit of completing FIA is what happens next. Graduates who complete the Level 4 Diploma in Accounting and Business are exempt from all three Applied Knowledge papers in the ACCA Qualification — BT, MA and FA. That means you skip straight to the Applied Skills level (LW, PM, TX, FR, AA and FM) when you move to the full ACCA.

This makes FIA a genuine springboard, not a detour.

How Long Does FIA Take?

FIA exams are computer-based and available on demand year-round, so the pace is entirely your own. A motivated student could complete all three diplomas in 12 to 18 months. Students balancing work and study typically take two to three years.

Who Is FIA For?

  • School leavers with no A-levels or equivalent qualifications who want to enter accounting
  • Career changers who need foundational accounting knowledge before the full ACCA
  • Students who want to test their aptitude for accountancy before committing to the full qualification
  • Accounting technicians who want formal ACCA recognition of their skills

FIA vs Starting ACCA Directly

If you already hold a relevant degree or strong A-levels, ACCA's exemption framework may allow you to start the ACCA Qualification directly — possibly skipping all three Applied Knowledge papers. Use ACCA's exemption calculator at accaglobal.com to check your position before registering for FIA.

If you're starting with minimal qualifications or returning to study after a long gap, FIA is the right entry point. The progressive Level 2–4 structure is designed precisely for this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is FIA the same as CAT?

Yes. FIA replaced the older CAT (Certified Accounting Technician) qualification. The rebranding clarified that these qualifications are the foundation of the ACCA path, not a separate professional track.

Do I need to complete all three FIA diplomas?

No — you receive the qualification for each level you complete and can stop at any point. However, completing the full Level 4 Diploma is needed to unlock exemptions from the three ACCA Applied Knowledge papers.

Can I work as an accountant with just FIA?

Yes. FIA qualifications are recognised by employers — particularly for bookkeeping, accounts assistant and payroll roles. However, a full ACCA qualification opens significantly more doors in terms of seniority and salary.

Are FIA exams hard?

The Level 2 exams (FA1, MA1) have 80–81% pass rates — highly accessible. Level 4 exams drop to 66–78%. The specialist certificates (FAU, FFM) sit at 46–55%. Difficulty increases progressively by design, matching the qualification's step-by-step structure.
