Total Hours and the Triennial Period
New Jersey operates on a three-year renewal cycle. For the current period, you must accumulate 120 CPE hours between 1 January 2024 and 31 December 2026. Crucially, you cannot bank hours from a strong year and coast: the board requires a minimum of 20 hours in each individual year of the triennial. If you have banked 100 hours by the end of year two, you still need to complete 20 hours in year three — even if that pushes your total above 120. Excess credits cannot be carried forward into the next triennial.
Renewal forms are typically sent out in early November. If you have moved and not updated your address, do so promptly — the board will not forward renewal notices, and a missed renewal carries a late fee of $135 plus a $50 penalty.
The NJ Law and Ethics Requirement
Every licensed CPA in New Jersey — regardless of sector — must complete a 4-credit course in New Jersey Law and Ethics each triennial period. This is one of the strictest requirements in the state: self-study is not permitted for this component. The course must be taken through an in-person programme or a live webinar delivered by a board-approved sponsor. The New Jersey Society of CPAs (NJCPA) is one such approved provider and runs these courses regularly throughout the triennial.
New licensees have an additional obligation: they must take the Law and Ethics course within six months before or after the date of initial licensure and submit the completion certificate to the board within 30 days. New licensees are otherwise exempt from all other CPE requirements for their initial renewal period.
Technical Subject Area Requirements
Of your 120 hours, at least 60 must be in technical subject areas. The New Jersey Administrative Code defines technical subjects as accounting, auditing, business law, computer science and IT, economics, finance, management advisory services, mathematics and statistics, SEC practice, taxation, and professional ethics.
CPAs in public practice face an additional requirement: at least 24 of those 60 technical hours must be in Accounting and Auditing. CPAs working outside public practice do not have an A&A sub-minimum, though the 60-hour technical total still applies to everyone.
Approved CPE Providers and the NASBA Requirement
The New Jersey State Board of Accountancy accepts CPE only from providers who are registered with the board, registered with NASBA, accredited universities or colleges, national or state professional organisations, or federal/state government agencies.
Learnsignal is a NASBA-registered CPE provider, so all courses on the platform count toward New Jersey's 120-hour requirement. Browse our NASBA-approved CPE courses to find options across accounting, auditing, tax, finance, and technology. For a state-by-state comparison, see our CPA CPE requirements guide for 2026.
Delivery Formats and Credit Limits
New Jersey is flexible about how you earn most of your hours. Up to 100% of your 120 hours can be earned via self-study, provided the provider is NASBA-registered. Nano learning (10-minute modules earning 0.2 credits each) has been accepted since 2018, again requiring a NASBA-registered sponsor. Instruction credit is limited to 60 hours per triennial, and authoring published materials is limited to 30 hours. Marketing and practice development courses are not accepted under any circumstances.
The 4-hour NJ Law and Ethics course is the one exception to the self-study flexibility — it must be live (in-person or webinar).
Record Keeping and Audits
You do not need to submit CPE documentation when you renew your licence, but you are required to retain evidence of completed CPE for at least five years from the end of the triennial. The board conducts random audits, and failure to produce documentation can result in financial penalties and a requirement to make up deficient credits.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I don't complete 120 hours by 31 December 2026?
You should switch your licence to inactive status rather than renew as active with a deficiency. Holding an active licence without meeting CPE requirements can result in significant financial penalties from the board.
Can I use online courses to meet all 120 hours?
Yes — up to 100% of your CPE can be earned through self-study or online courses, provided the provider is NASBA-registered. The only exception is the 4-credit NJ Law and Ethics course, which must be completed via a live in-person session or live webinar.
Does nano learning count toward New Jersey CPE?
Yes. New Jersey has accepted nano learning since 2018, provided the sponsor is NASBA-registered.
Do I need to submit CPE certificates when I renew?
No. You self-certify when renewing online. However, you must retain documentation for five years in case the board audits your records.
What if I earned more than 120 hours — can I carry them forward?
No. New Jersey does not permit carry-forward of excess credits into the next triennial period.
Plan Your CPE Before the December Deadline
With the current triennial closing on 31 December 2026, the final months of the year tend to fill up fast for CPE providers. If you still have hours to complete — especially the mandatory NJ Law and Ethics course — do not leave it until December. Learnsignal's NASBA-approved CPE courses cover a wide range of technical subjects and are available on-demand so you can fit them around your client work.
