Maine asks its CPAs to complete continuing professional education every single year, rather than over a multi-year cycle. If you hold a Maine licence, the headline number is 40 hours of CPE annually, due when you renew. This guide sets out what Maine's Board of Accountancy rule says, including the ethics requirement, the carry-forward limit, the caps on certain types of credit, record keeping and reinstatement, and flags the points we could not confirm. For how other states compare, see our guides to Michigan CPE requirements and New Jersey CPE requirements.

The information comes from Maine's Board of Accountancy Rule 02-280 Chapter 5, the Maine statute on continuing education (32 M.R.S. section 12233, current through October 2025) and the Board's licensing pages, checked on 17 October 2026. The version of the rule we read shows its latest amendment as effective 1 January 2020, and none of the pages shows a last-updated date, so confirm the current wording with the Board before you rely on it.

How the annual rule works

The rule says all licensees shall obtain 40 hours of CPE annually, due at the time of renewal, and the Board's licensing page says the same. The CPE period is the twelve months before your renewal date, because the licence is annual. The statute leaves the number to the Board, within a range of no less than 20 and no more than 40 hours a year, so Maine sits at the top of that range. If you are comparing states, remember that many others use a three-year cycle, which gives you more flexibility; our guide to how CPE credit is calculated explains how the hours themselves are measured.

Ethics hours

Maine requires at least 4 hours of CPE in professional ethics every three years. We read the qualifying content as Maine accountancy law and the Board's conduct rules, or equivalent SEC or AICPA standards, but check the exact wording with the Board before you book a course, because an ethics course that suits another state may not meet Maine's description.

Carry-forward

If you complete more than 40 hours in a year, no more than 20 of the excess hours may be carried forward. We read this as carrying into the next year only, so it is a small cushion rather than a way to bank hours for several years.

Caps on certain credit

The rule limits some kinds of credit to 50 percent of the hours required. Credit for subjects such as communication arts, mathematics and statistics, economics, business law, human resources and software may not exceed 50 percent of the hours required. Credit for teaching is capped at 50 percent, with three hours of credit for each hour taught, for first presentations only. Credit for published work is also capped at 50 percent. In practice this means you cannot meet the requirement entirely through peripheral subjects or by teaching, so plan to take core accounting, auditing or tax content as well. Our fields of study list helps you categorise courses.

Self-study, sponsors and nano learning

Licensees in group or self-study programmes must document their participation. We did not find a numeric cap on self-study in the sections of the rule we read, and we did not find anything on nano learning, so we are not stating a rule for either. We also found no requirement in Chapter 5 that sponsors be on the NASBA Registry, so do not assume Maine imposes one. The rule does accept meetings of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy, as long as you document the agenda. For how self-study is treated elsewhere, see CPE self-study rules by state.

New licensees

A new licensee must complete at least 40 credits of acceptable CPE in the first full annual period after the year in which they were licensed.

Records and audits

Keep your CPE records for the three annual licensure periods before the current one, on a rolling basis. Your certification at renewal is subject to audit, so keep certificates that show the sponsor, title, date, location where relevant, and hours. Sponsors are expected to keep attendance records, outlines, dates, instructors and hours.

Renewal dates and late renewal

The rule says licences expire annually without giving a date. The Board's web page says CPAs renew annually on 30 September, and that is the date we use here, attributed to the Board's page rather than the rule. Public accountants follow a different date, based on first licensure, according to the Board's FAQ. A licence may be renewed online up to 90 days after expiration, according to the rule.

Reinstatement

If your licence has lapsed and you need to reinstate it, the rule requires you to demonstrate completion of 80 hours of continuing professional education, within the prior 24 months, including 4 ethics hours. Note that 80 hours applies to reinstatement only, not to ordinary renewal.

What we could not confirm

We could not confirm any rule on inactive or retired status in Chapter 5, even though the statute lets the Board relax requirements for people who certify they will not practise public accountancy. We did not find a rule on nano learning. We checked only the Board's July 2025 minutes for changes, so confirm that no amendment has been adopted since. If you practise in more than one state, read our guide to CPA mobility and CPE across state lines.
