What Is the CIMA P1 Paper?

Management Accounting (P1) is the Performance pillar paper at CIMA Operational level. It is the most mathematically demanding of the Operational papers and covers costing, budgeting, and short-term decision-making. P1 is closely related to the ACCA PM paper and forms the foundation for P2 (Advanced Management Accounting) at Management level.

Exam Format

P1 is a 90-minute objective test with 60 questions. Pass mark is scaled (typically around 70%). Available on demand. Questions include calculations and conceptual questions on management accounting techniques.

Key Topics in CIMA P1

Cost accounting: Marginal costing, absorption costing, reconciliation of profit differences. Activity-based costing. Specialist costing: Job, batch, process, and service costing. Joint product costing. Budgeting: Functional budgets, master budgets, flexed budgets, behavioural aspects of budgeting. Standard costing and variance analysis: Material, labour, variable overhead, and fixed overhead variances. Mix and yield variances. Sales variances. Performance measurement: Divisional performance (ROI, RI), non-financial performance indicators. Short-term decision-making: Contribution analysis, break-even, limiting factor analysis, make-or-buy, shutdown decisions.

P1 Pass Rates

P1 pass rates are typically 55-68%. The variance analysis and limiting factor topics are where most candidates struggle. Calculation accuracy under the time pressure of 90-minute objective tests is critical.

Study Tips for CIMA P1

Practise variance calculations until they are automatic — they are heavily tested. For limiting factor questions, always set up the contribution per limiting factor table systematically. The 90-minute format requires quick mental arithmetic or efficient calculator use. Allow 8-12 weeks of part-time study.

FAQ

How different is CIMA P1 from ACCA MA?

P1 covers similar ground to ACCA MA but goes deeper on several topics including process costing, mix and yield variances, and divisional performance measurement. If you have passed ACCA MA recently, P1 revision time can be significantly reduced.
