ACCA Levels of Qualification: From Applied Knowledge to Strategic Professional
The ACCA qualification has three levels — Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills, and Strategic Professional. Here's a clear breakdown of all 13 papers, the Ethics module, and how the PER works.
The ACCA qualification is structured in three distinct levels, each building on the last. Understanding how these levels are organised — what's covered at each stage, how many exams are involved, and what you're working towards — is essential for planning your ACCA journey. Here's a clear overview of the full structure.
The Three Levels of ACCA
The ACCA qualification is divided into:
- Applied Knowledge — 3 papers (entry level)
- Applied Skills — 6 papers (core professional skills)
- Strategic Professional — 4 papers (2 Essentials + 2 Options) plus professional elements
In total, ACCA requires 13 exam papers, the Ethics and Professional Skills module, and three years of practical experience (the PER — Practical Experience Requirement).
Level 1: Applied Knowledge
The Applied Knowledge level introduces the fundamentals of accounting, business, and management. The three papers are:
- BT — Business and Technology — organisations, business environment, governance, ethics, technology, and managing people. Delivered as an on-demand computer-based exam.
- MA — Management Accounting — cost accounting, budgeting, variance analysis, and management decision-making. On-demand CBE.
- FA — Financial Accounting — double-entry bookkeeping, preparation of financial statements, basic IFRS. On-demand CBE.
All three Applied Knowledge papers are available on demand (year-round, at approved test centres) and are objectively marked (multiple choice and data entry questions). There are no written components. The pass mark is 50% for each paper.
Level 2: Applied Skills
The Applied Skills level develops core technical skills across six papers:
- LW — Corporate and Business Law — English and Welsh business law (or global law variant for non-UK candidates), contract law, company law, employment law.
- PM — Performance Management — advanced management accounting, variance analysis, transfer pricing, balanced scorecard, decision-making under uncertainty.
- TX — Taxation — UK income tax, corporation tax, VAT, national insurance (UK variant) or other jurisdictions.
- FR — Financial Reporting — preparation and interpretation of financial statements under IFRS, group accounting, business combinations.
- AA — Audit and Assurance — audit processes, risk, evidence, reporting, professional ethics in an audit context.
- FM — Financial Management — investment appraisal, working capital management, capital structure, risk management, business valuations.
Applied Skills papers are computer-based exams offered four times per year (March, June, September, December). They include both objective test questions and constructed response (written) sections. Pass mark: 50%.
Level 3: Strategic Professional
The Strategic Professional level develops the strategic, integrative, and advanced technical skills of a qualified accountant. It has two components:
Essentials (both required)
- SBL — Strategic Business Leader — an integrated case study exam combining strategy, leadership, governance, ethics, and professional skills. The exam uses a pre-seen case study released approximately 7 weeks in advance. A 4-hour exam integrating multiple competencies.
- SBR — Strategic Business Reporting — advanced financial reporting under IFRS, group accounting in complex scenarios, disclosure and presentation, financial analysis.
Options (choose 2 from 4)
- AFM — Advanced Financial Management — complex corporate finance, M&A, risk management, treasury, and international finance.
- APM — Advanced Performance Management — strategic performance measurement, big data and analytics, organisational performance, international contexts.
- ATX — Advanced Taxation — complex tax planning, international tax, tax investigations, stamp duty.
- AAA — Advanced Audit and Assurance — complex audit engagements, regulatory frameworks, money laundering, integrated assurance.
The two Options papers you choose should reflect your career specialism or intended area of practice. Most candidates choose Options that align with their role — finance professionals typically choose AFM; management accountants often choose APM; practitioners in audit firms typically choose AAA.
The Ethics and Professional Skills Module
This is an online module (not an exam) that must be completed before attempting the Strategic Professional exams. It covers ethical frameworks, professional judgement, communication, and commercial acumen through interactive scenarios. It takes approximately 20–30 hours and is completed at your own pace on the ACCA website.
Practical Experience Requirement (PER)
To become a fully qualified ACCA member (ACCA after your name), you must complete 36 months of relevant practical work experience and record it through the ACCA's PER framework. The experience must be supervised by an ACCA member or equivalent qualified accountant and must demonstrate achievement against ACCA's performance objectives. The PER is typically completed concurrently with the exams.
Exemptions
ACCA grants exemptions from some papers based on prior qualifications. Graduates with accounting or business degrees often receive exemptions from some or all Applied Knowledge papers. AAT Level 4 holders typically receive exemptions from the Applied Knowledge papers. Exemptions save time but cannot be obtained from Strategic Professional papers.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does ACCA take to complete?
From registration to full membership, most students take 3–5 years. The exam timeline depends on how many papers you sit per year and your pass rate. The work experience requirement (36 months) usually runs alongside the exams. With exemptions from Applied Knowledge and sitting 3–4 papers per year, it's possible to complete all exams in 3 years.
Is there a time limit on completing ACCA?
Yes — ACCA introduced a 10-year rule. From the date your first exam is counted, you must complete all exams within 10 years and complete a maximum of 8 attempts per paper. This is generous in practice, but it's worth being aware of if you're considering very part-time study over a long period.
