AAT assessments are computer based, and most can be taken either at an assessment venue or remotely at home. AAT says that with remote invigilation you and your screen are recorded in the assessment platform, and its fee page lists an extra 41 pounds per assessment. This guide covers which assessments you can sit remotely, the exceptions AAT lists, what it costs, how results timing differs and how to book. For exam dates see our AAT exam dates guide, and for fees more broadly see our AAT exam fees guide.

What remote invigilation is

AAT defines remote invigilation as a way of sitting an assessment where you and your screen are recorded in the assessment platform. It lets you take a computer-based assessment from home or another secure location rather than travelling to a venue. The assessment itself is the same one you would sit at a venue.

Which assessments you can sit remotely

AAT states that all unit assessments are available to schedule and sit remotely, with exceptions. The exceptions it lists are the Level 3 Management Accounting Techniques unit, the Botswana version of the Level 3 tax unit and some end-point assessment components. If your next assessment is Management Accounting Techniques, plan to sit it at a venue.

What it costs

AAT's grading and fees page lists remote invigilation at an extra 41 pounds per assessment on top of the assessment fee. The page is undated, so confirm the amount before you book. AAT also says students never pay AAT directly for assessment fees, so you pay your training provider or the assessment venue, and they may add a booking fee.

Results timing

AAT says computer-marked unit assessments return results by the end of the next working day when taken at a venue, and within 10 working days when taken remotely. Plan any deadline around the longer figure.

How to book

You need to be registered with AAT. Then agree a date with your training provider or an assessment venue. AAT's venue search lists approved venues, and most assessments are available every day. We could not read AAT's student booking page for remote invigilation, so we do not describe the booking steps in detail and recommend asking your provider.

Choosing between home and a venue

Sitting at home saves travel but depends on your equipment and surroundings, and the results come later. Sitting at a venue avoids the extra fee and gives next-day results, but you must travel and book a slot. If you are close to a deadline, the faster result may matter more than the fee.

What assessments cost by level

AAT's fee page lists unit assessments at 67 pounds each at Level 2 and Level 3 and 69 pounds each at Level 4. The Level 2 synoptic is 72 pounds. On those list prices, the four Level 3 Diploma unit assessments cost 268 pounds before any remote fee, and the five Level 4 Diploma unit assessments cost 345 pounds. If you sat all four Level 3 units remotely, the extra fee would add 164 pounds at 41 pounds each, but Management Accounting Techniques cannot be taken remotely, so the real extra would be lower. These totals are our arithmetic from AAT's per-assessment prices. Providers may charge differently.

If something goes wrong

AAT's rules on technical problems and resits are set out in its policies, which we have not summarised. Our what to do if you fail an AAT exam guide covers the general steps, and your provider can tell you how a failed sitting is handled.
