What Is the US CPA?

The CPA (Certified Public Accountant) is the primary accounting qualification in the United States, regulated by the AICPA (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants) and administered through state boards under NASBA (National Association of State Boards of Accountancy). It is required for signing US audit reports and is highly respected in international financial markets.

Why Would a UK Accountant Want the US CPA?

For UK-based accountants, the US CPA is most valuable when: working for a US-headquartered company where US GAAP knowledge is important; pursuing roles at Big Four firms with significant US client work; planning a career in the United States; working in sectors with strong US financial reporting standards exposure; or wanting to differentiate in the international job market.

Can UK Accountants Sit the US CPA?

Yes - UK candidates can sit the US CPA through NASBA's international testing programme. Most UK accounting graduates meet the 150 credit hour education requirement, though specific requirements vary by state. ACA and ACCA holders may also receive some recognition depending on the state board.

The CPA Exam Structure

Under the CPA Evolution framework (effective January 2024), the exam has a core-plus-discipline format. The three core sections are: Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR), Auditing and Attestation (AUD), and Regulation (REG - US tax and business law). Candidates also choose one discipline section from: Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR), Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP), or Information Systems and Controls (ISC). Each section is a computer-based test. All four sections must be passed.

Cost and Timeline for UK Candidates

Total CPA exam fees are approximately USD 1,000-1,700 plus state registration fees and a one-time enrollment fee (around USD 350). UK candidates also need a credential evaluation (typically USD 200-300). The REG section on US tax law is challenging for UK candidates without US tax background. Total study time is typically 300-400 hours across all four sections.

ACA/ACCA vs US CPA for International Careers

ACA and ACCA are more internationally portable than US CPA outside of North America. The US CPA is most valuable if you want to work in the US or at US-headquartered global companies where US GAAP expertise is valued.

FAQ

Does ACCA give exemptions from the US CPA?

Some NASBA states recognise ACCA as meeting part of the educational requirement. ACCA and AICPA have had discussions about mutual recognition but a formal MRA has not been established as of 2026. UK candidates should check with their specific target state board for current arrangements.
