Tax Accountant Interviews: What to Expect
Tax accountant interviews are heavily technical — more so than most finance roles. Employers expect you to demonstrate real knowledge of the relevant tax legislation, not just awareness that it exists. The exact technical focus depends on the role: personal tax, corporate tax, VAT, employment taxes, and international tax each have their own core knowledge areas.
Corporate Tax Questions
- "Walk me through how you would prepare a corporation tax computation."
- "What are the main adjustments you make to accounting profit to arrive at taxable profit?"
- "How do capital allowances work? What is the Annual Investment Allowance?"
- "What is the difference between a timing difference and a permanent difference for deferred tax purposes?"
- "When does a company need to make quarterly instalment payments for corporation tax?"
Personal Tax Questions
- "Explain how the personal allowance taper works for high earners."
- "What is the difference between employment income and self-employment income for tax purposes?"
- "How is capital gains tax calculated for an individual disposing of shares?"
- "What are the inheritance tax nil-rate band and residence nil-rate band?"
VAT Questions
- "What is the difference between exempt and zero-rated supplies?"
- "How does partial exemption work?"
- "What are the rules around the VAT flat rate scheme?"
Competency Questions
- "Describe a complex tax issue you have resolved. What was your approach?"
- "How do you stay current with changes to tax legislation?"
- "Tell me about a time you identified a tax risk for a client or employer that others had missed."
How to Prepare
Read HMRC's manuals and technical guidance on the specific tax areas relevant to the role. If applying for a practice role, familiarise yourself with the firm's client profile — a firm with many HNWI clients will focus on personal tax; a firm with corporate clients will focus on corporate tax. ACCA ATX and TX knowledge is directly applicable — revise the core computations before the interview.
