AP and AR Interviews: What to Expect
Accounts payable and accounts receivable roles are often the entry point into a finance career. Interviews test practical bookkeeping knowledge, attention to detail, and your ability to handle supplier and customer relationships professionally. They are less technically demanding than qualified accountant interviews but still require solid double-entry understanding.
Accounts Payable Interview Questions
- "How do you process a purchase invoice from receipt to payment?"
- "What is a three-way match and why is it important?"
- "How do you handle a supplier disputing a payment?"
- "What checks do you perform before authorising a payment run?"
- "How do you manage cash flow when multiple supplier payments fall due simultaneously?"
- "Describe your experience with BACS, CHAPS, and faster payments."
Accounts Receivable Interview Questions
- "Walk me through your credit control process."
- "How do you approach chasing an overdue invoice from a long-standing customer?"
- "What would you do if a customer disputed an invoice for services they claim weren't delivered?"
- "How do you calculate debtor days and what does the figure tell you?"
- "At what point would you recommend escalating a debt to legal action?"
General Finance Assistant Questions
- "What accounting software have you used? How comfortable are you with Xero/Sage/QuickBooks?"
- "How do you ensure accuracy when processing a high volume of transactions?"
- "What is a control account and how does it relate to the sales ledger?"
How to Stand Out
AP/AR roles attract many applicants. Stand out by demonstrating AAT study progress, familiarity with at least one accounting software platform, and specific examples of volume you've handled. If you've reduced DSO (debtor days) or improved payment processing times, quantify it.
