Online CPE can involve a free event, a single paid course or an annual subscription. Your useful budget is the amount required to complete the learning that meets your needs, including any separately purchased subjects and access renewals. A low advertised price per credit does not tell you whether the course is suitable, whether you can finish it or whether your board will accept it.

Start with your own remaining requirements; there is no single annual credit target that fits every CPA. Then price a realistic course list. This article explains the budget components. Our subscription-versus-individual-course guide covers the payment-model decision, while the provider comparison helps you evaluate a shortlist.

Current price examples: a snapshot, not a market average

The following primary product pages were checked on 22 October 2026. Prices are displayed US-dollar amounts, before any unverified taxes, discounts or checkout adjustments. These are different products with different coverage, so the table is a set of budget anchors rather than a ranking of equivalent offers.

ProductDisplayed priceWhat the comparison covers
CPE Depot: Guarantees and Commitments under U.S. GAAP$20One self-study course, 2 recommended CPE credits. Check individual access terms.
CPE Depot self-study membership$179 / 365 daysSelf-study access; group webinars, ethics, regulatory review and nano courses excluded.
CPA Self-Study subscription$179 / yearPDF self-study catalogue; page describes automatic annual renewal.
Learnsignal Standard CPD yearly plan$399.99 / yearAdvertised CPD library package. Confirm the CPE disclosure for selected courses.

Learnsignal's same pricing page also displays Premium at $599.98 per year and Elite at $1,599.98 per year. Those are package prices, not prices for a fixed number of US CPA CPE credits. Choose additional features because you expect to use them; do not divide a CPD-unit marketing total into the subscription fee and label the result a CPE cost.

Calculate cost per eligible completed credit

Use this planning formula: total learning spend ÷ eligible credits actually completed. For a future budget, use a cautious estimate of the credits you expect to finish, then replace it with the actual result. Keep unverified or unfinished courses out of the completed-credit denominator.

For example, the $20, two-credit course above has a displayed course-fee ratio of $10 per recommended credit. That remains subject to successful completion and acceptance for your particular requirement. A $179 subscription used for 20 eligible completed credits has an effective subscription cost of $8.95 per credit; used for only 5, it costs $35.80 per credit. Those are calculations, not promises about a particular learner's eligibility or the number of credits needed.

A large catalogue does not create a meaningful denominator by itself. You cannot claim every available credit, and buying access earns none. Do not count a course twice because you watched it twice or add certificates whose acceptance you have not checked. Our CPE calculation guide explains why published credit and personal study time are different measures.

Build a budget that includes the gaps

List subscription charges, individual course fees and any required learning outside the chosen package. Check whether materials, assessments, retakes and certificates are included. Do not assume an extra fee exists, but do not assume it is included when the seller's terms are unclear. Ask for confirmation before purchasing.

A transparent example budget

Consider a hypothetical CPA who has checked their requirements and plans to complete 20 suitable credits during the next 12 months. They budget $179 for a subscription and allow an assumed $60 for a separately required course. The $60 is a worksheet input, not a quoted provider price. Before tax, their planned spend is $239 and the planned effective cost is $11.95 per credit.

If only 12 of those credits are completed and eligible, the same $239 produces a cost of approximately $19.92 per credit. If the separately required course is already included, the extra line may be zero. If a second access year is necessary, the budget increases. This is why a course list and calendar are more useful than a headline saving.

Keep cash cost separate from study time. A paid course completed in a workable schedule may be a better use of resources than several free events you cannot attend. Conversely, paying more does not prove a course is more relevant or more likely to meet a board requirement.

When free CPE is genuinely free

Free credited learning exists, but inspect the individual offer. CPAacademy.org, for example, distinguishes credited learning formats from archived webinars that do not earn CPE. Confirm the current event date or access window, fee, credit disclosure and attendance or assessment conditions. A sample lesson or a free video is not automatically free CPE.

Do not build a deadline-critical plan around an expired webinar listing or assume an archive preserves the original credit. Save the applicable course information and completion evidence. Our free CPE guide gives a fuller checking process without treating every free educational resource as credited learning.

Turn the budget into a buying decision

  1. Confirm the remaining subjects, credits and deadlines with your licensing board's rules.
  2. Select actual courses and check sponsor, method and course eligibility.
  3. Price the complete basket and record access and renewal dates.
  4. Reserve study time, including assessment and evidence checks.
  5. Review the budget using completed eligible credits, not the advertised library size.

If your employer funds professional development, use the CPE funding request template to explain the work benefit alongside the cost. To explore Learnsignal, compare the current packages with your course shortlist and confirm CPE-specific information before buying for licence reporting.
