A CPE subscription can be good value when it contains courses you need and you have time to complete them. Individual purchases can suit a small, specific gap or a specialist requirement outside a subscription. The decision starts with your remaining requirements and a realistic course list, rather than the largest advertised library.

This guide compares payment models. For a broader budget, including separate ethics courses and the cost of unused access, see how much online CPE costs. Prices below were checked on 22 October 2026, in US dollars. Recheck the linked product pages and checkout before buying.

First, define what you actually need to buy

Write down your licensing jurisdiction, reporting dates, remaining credits and any subject or delivery-method restrictions. Separate a general credit gap from a specific requirement: a low-cost technology course will not necessarily meet a prescribed state ethics requirement. NASBA sponsor registration is one part of the check; your board retains authority over acceptance. Our sponsor-verification guide explains the steps.

Next, list courses you would genuinely complete. Record the subject, level, prerequisites, credit disclosure, completion conditions and intended study month. Count courses already included in your employer's training before buying overlapping access. A subscription becomes valuable through useful completed learning, not simply because you can open hundreds of titles.

Compare the two models on the same basis

Questions to ask before comparing prices
FactorSubscriptionIndividual courses
CoverageCheck the included catalogue and excluded formats.Check each selected course and any separate assessment charge.
Time windowNote the start and end of the access period.Note the purchase, course-expiry and assessment deadlines.
Completion evidenceConfirm certificates for the included courses and later retrieval.Confirm the same for each purchase.
Changes of planA broader catalogue may let you change topic during the term.A new topic may require another purchase.
RenewalCheck automatic renewal, cancellation timing and future price.Check whether additional access or a later edition costs extra.
Special requirementsVerify prescribed ethics or specialist courses individually.Buy the exact qualifying course rather than a similarly named one.

A useful comparison holds the intended completion window, required subjects and acceptable formats constant. If one option includes live events and another is self-study only, the price difference buys a different service. Decide whether you need that service before calling one option cheaper.

A current price anchor and three usage examples

CPE Depot lists its self-study membership at $179 for 365 days. Its listed exclusions include group webinars, ethics, regulatory review and nano courses. A specific included course, A Closer Look at Guarantees and Commitments under U.S. GAAP, is also listed separately at $20 for 2 recommended CPE credits.

The table models a learner completing distinct, suitable two-credit courses within one 365-day planning window. It uses $20 per course as a calculation assumption based on that example, not a claim that every course costs $20. The membership calculation assumes all selected courses are included and accepted for the learner's needs. Individual-course access expiry must be checked separately; this is not a claim that both purchases have identical terms. Taxes, discounts and excluded courses are not included.

Illustrative usage, not a universal annual CPE requirement
UsageAssumed distinct coursesIndividual calculationMembershipDecision to investigate
Low2 courses / 4 credits2 × $20 = $40$179Individual purchases may fit a small gap.
Medium8 courses / 16 credits8 × $20 = $160$179Reprice the actual basket; flexibility may matter.
High20 courses / 40 credits20 × $20 = $400$179Check inclusion and realistic completion capacity.

At this assumed per-course price, nine courses cost $180, just above the membership price. That is an arithmetic crossover, not a guaranteed saving or recommended credit target. Replace the assumptions with the prices of your selected courses. If half the intended courses are unsuitable or unfinished, the attractive headline calculation stops describing your situation.

Keep subscription access separate from your reporting cycle

A one-year subscription does not necessarily cover a two- or three-year reporting cycle. Nor does buying just before a deadline extend that deadline. Draw two timelines: one for provider access and one for the board's completion/reporting dates. Place each course on both. If you need a second subscription year, include its expected cost and the uncertainty around future prices.

Automatic renewal also varies. For example, CPA Self-Study's subscription page describes a $179 annual PDF-course subscription with automatic renewal after 12 months. Do not transfer that policy to another provider. Save the terms applying to your own purchase and put a renewal review in your calendar.

When a mixed approach makes sense

You do not have to choose one model for every requirement. An existing employer subscription might cover reporting updates while a separately purchased, board-appropriate ethics course fills a narrow gap. Conversely, buying a few specialist courses first can help establish your learning preferences before committing to a broader library.

Judge the mixture by the whole basket. Buying an inexpensive subscription and then paying for most of the courses you actually need elsewhere can cost more than a carefully selected set of individual courses. Include time constraints too: a free scheduled event is useful only if you can attend and meet its participation requirements.

Your final buyer checklist

  • My course list addresses my actual remaining requirements and work objectives.
  • I have checked the sponsor, delivery method and course-specific eligibility.
  • I know what is included, excluded and charged separately.
  • I can finish within both the access term and the reporting deadline.
  • I have checked assessment, retake and certificate arrangements.
  • I understand cancellation, renewal and evidence access after expiry.
  • I compared the complete basket, including separately required courses.
