The most useful financial-reporting learning plan follows the decisions you make at work. A controller preparing group accounts has different needs from an analyst reading disclosures or an accountant documenting revenue contracts. Begin with those responsibilities, then choose the standards and application work that support them.

This guide curates real Learnsignal courses, checked on 22 October 2026, into an adaptable learning sequence. It does not assign a combined CPE award. Before using a course for US CPA reporting, confirm its course-specific CPE disclosure and your board's acceptance. CPD quantities on a public course page are not a substitute for that check.

Define your framework before choosing courses

Record the framework used for the financial statements you prepare or review. IFRS and US GAAP are distinct. An IFRS course can be relevant to a US CPA working with international reporting, but it should not be described as US GAAP instruction merely because the topic—revenue or consolidation, for example—exists in both frameworks.

Also distinguish a parent-company reporting package from local statutory accounts. You may need to understand more than one set of rules and the adjustments between them. Put that difference in your learning objective: “Explain the IFRS revenue judgement in our group reporting package” is more precise than “learn revenue recognition.”

Finally, identify the reporting period and the version of the standard you need. Ask whether the course covers the amendments relevant to that period. A course title alone cannot establish every update included in the material.

Build the route around four decisions

A financial-reporting and IFRS course sequence
Learning needCourse to inspectVerified readiness information
Connect statements, policies and useful disclosuresFinancial Reporting and DisclosuresPublished as Intermediate; expects basic financial-reporting/IFRS knowledge.
Analyse revenue contracts and performance obligationsIFRS 15 – Revenue RecognitionExpects basic understanding of revenue and business contracts.
Assess control and the consolidation boundaryIFRS 10 – Consolidated Financial StatementsExpects familiarity with parent/subsidiary relationships and financial statements.
Prepare for presentation and disclosure changesIFRS 18 – Presentation and Disclosure in Financial StatementsPublished as Intermediate; expects basic financial-reporting/IFRS knowledge.

The sequence is selective: a revenue specialist might take the first two stages, while a group accountant may prioritise consolidation and presentation. The recommendations above use the courses' published topics and prerequisites. Check the current course disclosure for any level, CPE field or credit amount not shown here; this article does not infer those details.

Route for someone new to international reporting

Start by reviewing how the primary statements connect, then use the reporting-and-disclosures course to identify the purpose of the accompanying notes. If the prerequisites are unfamiliar, refresh the basics before taking an intermediate course. A large learning gap is easier to address when it is made explicit.

Next, choose one recurring transaction from your responsibilities. For revenue, work through a fictional contract and document the questions you would ask before recognising an amount. Keep the exercise narrow enough to review: one contract and one judgement are more useful than an unfinished attempt to summarise an entire standard.

Use our IFRS 15 practical guide as supporting reading. Your course completion requirements and any CPE award remain separate from the extra reading and practice you choose to do.

Route for an experienced reporting professional

Start with the decision or review finding that currently consumes the most attention. That may be a difficult control assessment, an inconsistent disclosure or an upcoming presentation change. Choose the relevant standard-specific course, then return to broader reporting material only where it closes a gap.

For a consolidation objective, prepare an ownership-and-decision-rights diagram for a fictional group and list the information required to assess control. For presentation work, compare a sample statement and its notes with the topics in the course. Explain what information the preparer would need to collect and who should review it.

Do not treat completion as authority to change an accounting policy independently. Use your organisation's technical review and approval process for actual reporting decisions. The value of the learning plan is stronger analysis and better questions, with a clear record of what still needs specialist judgement.

Put IFRS 18 on the right timeline

The IFRS Foundation states that IFRS 18 applies to annual periods beginning on or after 1 January 2027, with early application permitted. It replaces IAS 1. That makes preparation relevant before the first applicable reporting period, but the date should not be confused with every entity's year-end or with a CPA's CPE reporting deadline.

When selecting learning, record the entity's applicable period, the standard version covered and any local endorsement considerations. Ask about course updates rather than assuming an older IAS 1 lesson covers the transition. Our IFRS 18 explainer provides a separate introduction to the reporting changes.

Use a work-output plan alongside the credit plan

Copy these fields into your learning plan
Work objectiveLearning outputReview checkpoint
Improve a recurring disclosureAnnotated fictional note showing the missing informationCan a colleague explain the judgement from the note?
Understand a revenue judgementShort contract-analysis memo with open questionsAre the assumptions and evidence clear?
Strengthen group-reporting knowledgeControl-assessment information checklistDoes it identify the evidence needed for a conclusion?
Prepare for presentation changesGap list with owner and target review dateAre the reporting period and relevant standard version recorded?

These outputs are suggested application exercises, not extra credited programmes. Schedule them around the reporting calendar and keep confidential company information within approved systems. After completing each course, record the actual award and evidence separately in your CPE tracking log.

Before enrolling

Check the course's relevance, prerequisites, current version, CPE field, credits, assessment and access terms. Confirm whether your board permits the course for any accounting-subject minimum you intend to meet. Learnsignal's Registry sponsor listing is useful evidence of sponsor status, not a guarantee that every course satisfies every individual requirement.

Explore the financial-reporting courses and accounting-standards courses, then place your shortlist in the annual learning-plan template. Choose the smallest coherent route that closes your identified gap, and add further courses when the next objective is clear.
