CAIA Continuing Education 2026: Recommended, Not Required
The CAIA Association does not mandate continuing education to maintain membership, but recommends 40 hours every two years, and active membership is required to use the designation.
The CAIA Association says it does not mandate continuing education to maintain membership status, but it recommends that members complete 40 hours of professional development every two years. The right to use the CAIA designation depends on keeping your membership current, and memberships expire on 31 May. This guide sets out what the CAIA Association says about continuing education, membership and the designation, and where it differs from credentials such as the CFA charter and the CAMS. No mandatory continuing education
The CAIA Association's FAQ says it does not mandate continuing education to maintain membership status. That makes the CAIA unlike many finance credentials, including the CFA charter, which requires annual reporting, or the CAMS, which requires 60 credits every three years. A CAIA charterholder is not required to log hours or report credits.
The recommended 40 hours
The same FAQ says the Association recommends that members engage in 40 hours of professional development every two years. It is a recommendation, not a rule, and the FAQ uses the term continuing education rather than CPE or CPD. If your employer or regulator asks you to maintain a record, 40 hours over two years is a reasonable target.
Membership is what keeps the designation
The FAQ says that using the CAIA designation requires active membership and that, if you allow your membership to lapse, you will have forfeited the right to use the designation. The FAQ does not say whether the charter itself survives a lapse, so we describe only the loss of the right to use the designation.
Fees and the 31 May expiry
The FAQ lists a one-year membership at US$350 and a two-year membership at US$650, and says memberships always expire on 31 May, whenever you joined or renewed. It also describes an emerging market rate and a professional leave status. Fees are as listed when we read the page, and the page is undated, so check the current fee before you renew.
Free learning
The FAQ says CAIA.nxt microcredentials are free to members. If you want a documented record of professional development, a microcredential gives you a dated completion to log.
How this compares with other finance credentials
Many finance credentials tie the designation to a reporting duty. The CFA charter asks for annual professional learning reporting, and our CFA Institute continuing education guide explains it. The CAMS asks for 60 credits every three years, which our CAMS recertification guide sets out. The CAIA is different: the only recurring obligation the Association states is paying for membership, and the learning target is a recommendation. That does not mean a record is worthless.
Why a record is still worth keeping
Employers, clients and regulators may ask how an alternative investments professional keeps up to date, even when the credential does not require it. A short log of conferences, papers read, courses and microcredentials, with dates and hours, answers that question in minutes. Treat the 40-hour recommendation as the standard you would want to be able to show.
What we could not confirm
The page on renewing a membership did not load, so we have not described the renewal steps. We found no CE reporting process because none is mandated. Confirm the current rules with the CAIA Association.
Planning your year
Put the 31 May expiry in your calendar, decide whether a one-year or two-year membership suits you, and keep a simple log of professional development. A target of about 20 hours a year meets the recommendation without any reporting obligation.
