Students often ask how long they have to finish ACCA. The answer depends on where you are in the qualification. According to ACCA's time limits page, you have seven years from your first Strategic Professional pass to pass the remaining exams, and passes at Foundations, Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills level never expire. A blanket ten-year rule is often quoted online, but ACCA's page applies a ten-year limit only to students whose first eligible exam session was December 2015 or earlier. This guide sets out the rules ACCA publishes, how extensions work, and what we could not confirm. For the wider picture see how long ACCA takes and the ACCA exam structure.

The seven-year rule

ACCA's time limits page says the clock for the Strategic Professional level starts when you pass your first Strategic Professional exam. From that date you have seven years to pass the remaining Strategic Professional exams. If you do not, older Strategic Professional passes lapse and you must resit them. ACCA's knowledge-base article on the same rule says the same. The practical point is that you can spend as long as you need on the earlier levels without penalty, and the countdown begins only when you pass your first Strategic Professional paper.

Which passes never expire

ACCA states that passes at the Foundations, Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels will never expire. That matters for career changers who pause for family, work or finances. A pass you earned years ago still counts when you return. The exception is exemptions: ACCA awards exemptions based on other qualifications, and those have their own age rules, covered below.

The ten-year limit that still circulates

Many older articles say ACCA students have ten years to finish. ACCA's page still carries a ten-year time limit, but it applies to students whose first eligible exam session was December 2015 or earlier. For everyone who started later, the seven-year Strategic Professional rule is the one that applies. If you see a blanket ten-year claim on a website, check it against ACCA's own page before relying on it.

Extensions

ACCA allows an extension of a maximum of one year. It is granted only for extenuating circumstances, and ACCA says expired results cannot be extended, so you need to apply before the deadline passes. We could not find a list of the evidence ACCA accepts, so ask ACCA directly before you plan around an extension.

Time limits for exemptions

The UK and Ireland audit route has its own five-year limit, and ACCA's exemptions page says UK exemptions are awarded only for qualifications less than five years old. If you plan to claim an exemption from a degree or another body's qualification, check the age of that qualification before you register. Check ACCA's exemptions page for which papers your qualification covers, and see our ACCA fees guide for what ACCA charges.

How many exams you can enter

ACCA's progression rules limit you to four exams in an exam cycle and eight per year. The page does not state a maximum number of attempts at any single exam, and we found no official statement of one. Our ACCA resit policy guide and how many ACCA papers per sitting cover what we can confirm about resits and entry limits.

The Ethics and Professional Skills Module and PER

Passing exams is not the only requirement for membership. You also need the Ethics and Professional Skills Module and 36 months of supervised practical experience. We cover both in our Ethics and Professional Skills Module guide and ACCA practical experience requirements. These requirements follow their own timetable, so a student who has finished the exams can still be some time from membership.

The redesigned qualification

ACCA has announced a redesigned qualification. ACCA's future qualification pages say it takes effect in 2027 and that the 36-month experience requirement stays, while the objectives will change. We have not checked how time limits will transfer, so if you are close to a deadline, read ACCA's transition guidance before you decide when to sit exams.
