AAT Personal Tax Guide: Current Level 4 Optional Unit
Study the current AAT Level 4 Personal Tax unit, including key topics and a practical assessment-preparation plan.
Updated for 2026: Personal Tax remains part of the current Q2022 Level 4 qualification, although older resources may use the former title or code.
What should current students study?
Use the current AAT Level 4 specification and materials labelled for Personal Tax. Do not rely on an old unit-code checklist as proof that every current learning outcome is covered.
Confirm the qualification version and the tax or syllabus year shown in MyAAT before booking.
Core areas in Personal Tax
- Income Tax and National Insurance
- Capital Gains Tax
- Inheritance Tax principles
- Legal tax planning and administration
How to prepare effectively
- Use materials for the Finance Act stated by AAT for your assessment.
- Build computations in a consistent order.
- Distinguish tax planning from non-compliance and apply ethical rules.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using an old textbook without checking it against the current specification.
- Memorising a model answer without applying it to the scenario.
- Ignoring written interpretation because the calculations feel more familiar.
- Booking after one good mock rather than consistent timed performance.
Check that your resources are current
Use the qualification version and unit title shown in MyAAT as the source of truth. A resource can still contain useful practice while missing a current learning outcome, assessment requirement or rule. Map old questions to the Personal Tax specification and replace anything that no longer matches.
