Updated for 2026: FSLC is an older AQ2016 title or code. It is not a current standalone Q2022 unit. The closest current study area is Drafting and Interpreting Financial Statements.

What should current students study?

Use the current AAT Level 4 specification and materials labelled for Drafting and Interpreting Financial Statements. Do not rely on an old unit-code checklist as proof that every current learning outcome is covered.

If you previously passed FSLC, ask AAT or your provider to confirm whether and how the result transfers. The official transitional rules—not similarity of names—determine credit.

Core areas in Drafting and Interpreting Financial Statements

  • Current reporting requirements
  • Limited-company and consolidated statements
  • Adjustments and accounting standards
  • Financial analysis

How to prepare effectively

  • Use current Q2022 materials rather than an AQ2016 checklist.
  • Practise integrated scenarios that combine several adjustments.
  • Review written interpretation with the same care as calculations.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using an old textbook without checking it against the current specification.
  • Memorising a model answer without applying it to the scenario.
  • Ignoring written interpretation because the calculations feel more familiar.
  • Booking after one good mock rather than consistent timed performance.

Check that your resources are current

Use the qualification version and unit title shown in MyAAT as the source of truth. A resource can still contain useful practice while missing a current learning outcome, assessment requirement or rule. Map old questions to the Drafting and Interpreting Financial Statements specification and replace anything that no longer matches.

Current Q2022 Level 4 structure

The current AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting has 390 guided learning hours. Students complete all three mandatory units and two options:

Mandatory units

  • Applied Management Accounting
  • Drafting and Interpreting Financial Statements
  • Internal Accounting Systems and Controls

Choose two optional units

  • Business Tax
  • Personal Tax
  • Audit and Assurance
  • Cash and Financial Management
  • Credit and Debt Management

There are five individual computer-based assessments and no qualification synoptic assessment.

The September 2026 Level 4 change

Registration for the Q2022 Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting closes on 31 August 2026. Students already registered have until 31 July 2028 to complete its assessments.

The new Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians opens for registration and first teaching on 1 September 2026. It has five mandatory units. Students should confirm with their training provider which qualification they are registered for before choosing materials or booking assessments.
