Finance Director Interviews: What Makes Them Different

FD interviews operate at a different level from other finance roles. The focus shifts from technical accounting competence (assumed at this level) to strategic leadership, board-level communication, stakeholder management, and commercial judgment. Expect a multi-stage process including board presentations, peer interviews, and often external assessments.

The 90-Day Plan Presentation

Many FD recruitment processes include a presentation on your first 90 days. A strong plan covers: week 1–2 (listen and learn — understand the business before diagnosing), month 1 (assessment of the finance function, key stakeholder relationships, immediate risks), months 2–3 (initial improvements, quick wins, building trust). Avoid prescribing solutions before you've started — demonstrate curiosity and process.

Questions to Ask

At FD level, your questions signal your commercial thinking: "What does the Board currently see as the biggest financial risk to the business?", "What has prevented the finance function from being more strategic to date?", "What does success look like in the first year?"
