CSCS Card Types and How to Get One
A plain guide to the main CSCS card types, what each is for, the CITB health, safety and environment test, qualification requirements and how to apply through My CSCS.
A CSCS card is the Construction Skills Certification Scheme card that shows you hold the qualifications and health and safety knowledge needed for your job on a UK construction site. There are several types: Labourer, Blue Skilled Worker, Gold Skilled Worker, Supervisory, Manager, Academically and Professionally Qualified Person cards, plus Apprentice, Trainee and other temporary cards. Which one you get depends on your occupation and your qualification. To apply you need a recent CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test pass, or an approved alternative, plus proof of your qualification or registration, and you apply through the My CSCS app. For how often safety training is refreshed more broadly, see our guide to how often health and safety training needs renewing.
This guide is based on the information published by CSCS and CITB at the time of writing (October 2026). CSCS updates its rules and card pages from time to time, so use the official Card Finder before you apply.
What a CSCS card is and who it is for
According to CSCS, the cards are for individuals working on UK construction sites. CSCS itself says it does not deliver courses, qualifications or exams: it issues cards once you can show the right qualification (or registration for one) and a passed health and safety test. You can check whether a card is genuine and in date using CSCS Smart Check, which shows the expiry date and whether a card has been revoked.
CSCS card types at a glance
CSCS publishes a card page for each type. The table below summarises the main ones, using what CSCS states on those pages. Where a page does not state something (such as a colour), the table says so rather than guessing.
| Card | Who it is for | Qualification or registration | Validity stated by CSCS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Labourer | People doing labouring duties only; not for skilled occupations | Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment, or a CSCS-approved alternative | First card two years; renewal for a further five years with a declaration |
| Blue Skilled Worker | Skilled workers | Construction-related NVQ or SVQ at level 2 (or SVQ at SCQF level 5), or an approved apprenticeship | Five years |
| Gold Skilled Worker | Skilled workers | Construction-related NVQ or SVQ at level 3 (or SVQ at SCQF level 6), or an approved apprenticeship | Five years |
| Supervisory | Supervisor and technical occupations | Construction-related supervisory or technical NVQ or SVQ at level 3 or 4 | Five years |
| Manager | Managerial and technical occupations | Construction management or technical NVQ or SVQ at levels 4 to 7, or SVQ at SCQF level 10 or 11 | Five years |
| Academically Qualified Person (AQP) | People with certain construction-related degrees, HNDs, HNCs, CIOB certificates or NEBOSH qualifications | An accepted qualification, checked through the Card Finder | Five years |
| Professionally Qualified Person (PQP) | Members of CSCS-approved professional bodies | Current membership at an accepted level | Five years, and cannot be renewed (apply for a new card) |
| Apprentice | People on a recognised construction apprenticeship | Registration on the apprenticeship | Not stated on the pages checked |
| Trainee | People registered for an industry-approved qualification | Proof of registration | Five-year (non-renewable) or two-year (renewable) versions |
| Provisional | New entrants, probationary periods, short work experience | None; you must have passed the CITB test | Six months, not renewable |
CSCS also issues temporary Experienced Worker and Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager cards for people with on-the-job experience who are registered to complete a qualification, and an Industry Placement card for people on construction-related courses with a work placement.
Card colours
CSCS refers to blue cards for level 2 NVQs, gold cards for level 3 NVQs and black cards for the construction management level qualifications. Its Scheme Requirements (23rd revision, December 2021) also list the Labourer card as green and the cards for people in training or registered for a qualification as red. The individual card pages now describe cards mostly by name rather than colour, so treat the name as the reliable way to identify the card you need.
Which test do you need?
CSCS says you must have passed the appropriate level of the CITB HS&E test within the last two years, or hold an approved alternative. There are three levels of test, and CSCS says the Card Finder will confirm the right one for your occupation and qualification:
- Operatives: required for the Labourer, Trainee and Apprentice cards, and for most Blue Skilled Worker and Gold Skilled Worker cards.
- Managers and Professionals: required for the Manager card, and for the Academically and Professionally Qualified Person cards (these two also accept the CIC Health and Safety Test).
- Specialists: required for the Gold Supervisor card and for certain skilled worker cards in specific occupations.
You book the test with CITB, not with CSCS. According to CITB, each test lasts 45 minutes and has 50 questions, and the Operatives test needs at least 45 correct answers (a 90% pass mark). CITB states the test costs £23.50 at the time of writing, and you can book online or by phone. CITB's page does not state how long a pass remains valid; the two-year window comes from CSCS's application rules.
How to get a CSCS card, step by step
- Step 1: Work out which card you need. Use the CSCS Card Finder. Your occupation and qualification decide the card.
- Step 2: Get the qualification, or register for one. Skilled cards need a nationally recognised construction-related qualification. If you do not have one yet, CSCS can issue a temporary card once you are registered for the right qualification. CSCS suggests searching the Ofqual register of regulated qualifications when choosing a course.
- Step 3: Pass the right CITB HS&E test. CSCS advises waiting 24 hours after passing before you start your application.
- Step 4: Apply. Individuals apply through the My CSCS app, where you upload a clear photo or digital copy of your certificate or proof of registration, add your test details and pay by debit or credit card. Employers and training providers use CSCS Online.
- Step 5: Use your card. Once approved, your digital card is available in the app. CSCS says physical cards arrive within 10 days of approval.
What it costs
CSCS states that the application fee is £36, and that Apprentice cards are issued free of charge. CSCS warns that third-party providers are not affiliated with or approved by CSCS and are generally more expensive because of admin fees, so if you are asked for more than £36, check what extra you are getting. Test fees and qualification costs are separate: CITB sets the test fee, and course costs depend on the training provider.
Renewing and replacing a card
CSCS says cards can only be renewed from six months before the expiry date printed on the card until a year after it. Blue and Gold Skilled Worker cards can be renewed in the app, and skilled renewals need a recent CITB HS&E test pass. Many entry-level cards, such as Apprentice and Provisional, cannot be renewed, so you will need to move on to the card that matches your qualification. Lost, stolen or damaged cards can be replaced through My CSCS or CSCS Online.
Frequently asked questions
Which CSCS card do I need as a labourer?
The Labourer card, for people doing labouring duties only. CSCS says not to apply if you work in a skilled occupation, and that skilled workers holding it will be refused site access.
Do I need an NVQ to get a CSCS card?
For skilled cards, yes: CSCS says you must hold a nationally recognised construction-related qualification, such as an NVQ or SVQ at level 2 for blue cards and level 3 for gold cards, or an approved apprenticeship. If you are still working towards one, a temporary card may be available.
Do I have to sit the CITB test?
You need a pass of the appropriate level within the last two years or an approved alternative. The Card Finder shows which applies to you.
How long does a CSCS card last?
It depends on the card. Skilled worker, Supervisory, Manager, AQP and PQP cards are stated as valid for five years. Provisional cards last six months. The Labourer card lasts two years first time.
Can I apply for a card without an employer?
CSCS says individuals can apply through the My CSCS app. Employers and training providers have their own route through CSCS Online.
Keeping your training up to date
A card is only as useful as the knowledge behind it, and skilled worker renewals need a recent health and safety test pass. If you want to build your wider professional development record, our CPD hub is a good place to start looking at what is available.
This article gives general information only and is not health and safety, legal or compliance advice. Card rules, fees and test requirements change, so always confirm the current position with CSCS and CITB before you apply.
