CPE Course Selection Checklist for US CPAs
Use this copyable checklist to compare course suitability, CPE details, completion requirements and buying conditions before you enrol.
A useful CPE course should answer two questions: will it teach something you need, and can you use the credit for the requirement you intend to meet? Check both before buying. A relevant topic does not establish credit eligibility, and a course that fits a credit category may still be too basic for your work.
The checklist below brings the learning decision and the purchase decision together. Copy it into a document, complete one version for each shortlisted course, and keep the answers with the course description. It works whether you are comparing individual purchases or choosing courses within a subscription.
Start with the gap you need to fill
Write a one-sentence purpose before browsing: “I need to evaluate the assumptions in our cash-flow forecast,” or “I need an eligible ethics course for this reporting period.” The first describes a capability; the second describes a licensing requirement. Sometimes a course serves both, but establish that explicitly.
Check your licensing board's current rules and your own reporting dates. Record any outstanding subject requirement or delivery-method restriction separately from the overall credit total. If you hold several licences, make a separate eligibility decision for each. Our complete CPE guide provides the wider context, while the ethics CPE guide explains why an ethics label alone is insufficient.
Copy this pre-enrolment checklist
Replace each blank with a concrete answer or a source link. “Need to confirm” is a useful result: it tells you what to resolve before committing money or relying on the credit.
| Check | What to record | Your answer |
|---|---|---|
| Licensing jurisdiction | Board, licence status and relevant official rules page | __________ |
| Reporting window | Learning completion deadline and reporting or renewal date | __________ |
| Requirement to meet | Total-credit gap and any separate subject or ethics gap | __________ |
| Work objective | The task you want to perform or understand better | __________ |
| Sponsor | Provider name, relevant registration and verification date | __________ |
| Delivery method | The method advertised for this particular programme and its eligibility | __________ |
| Course identity | Exact title, version or update date, and course-page link | __________ |
| Credits and field | Advertised CPE award and field of study; separate from CPD hours | __________ |
| Level and prerequisites | Required knowledge, preparation, software or materials | __________ |
| Completion conditions | Required activities, assessment, pass standard, attempts and deadline | __________ |
| Evidence | How completion is documented and how records can be retained | __________ |
| Access and support | Access period, device needs, support route and any live-session time zone | __________ |
| Purchase conditions | Currency, total payable, inclusions, renewal, cancellation and refund terms | __________ |
| Decision | Choose, reject or hold; unresolved questions and who will answer them | __________ |
Verify the sponsor, then the individual course
Use the National Registry sponsor directory where Registry status is relevant. Check the sponsor's listed delivery method against the programme you intend to take. NASBA explains that its approval is granted at sponsor and delivery-method level, rather than course by course. Read NASBA's explanation of sponsor approval.
That check supports your decision; it does not settle every state-specific condition. NASBA's jurisdiction information notes that additional requirements may apply. Our sponsor-verification guide covers this step in more detail.
Next, read the course's own learning objectives and credit information. A category page headed “Audit” or “AI” does not tell you the CPE field assigned to every course inside it. If the programme lists only CPD hours, obtain its actual CPE details before including it in a CPE plan. Do not create your own conversion from video duration or marketing copy.
Decide whether the learning is useful at your level
Look for an objective you can connect to a real task. “Understand forecasting” is broad; comparing a forecasting method with the way your team builds assumptions is a clearer purpose. Read the outline for the depth, examples and activities you need. Check whether the material addresses your reporting framework, industry or software version where those details matter.
Also ask what you already know. A foundational course can be appropriate when you are changing roles, but repeating familiar material merely because it is easy to finish may leave the actual skill gap untouched. If you need practical modelling, a conceptual overview may be a starting point rather than the whole solution.
A hypothetical comparison
Suppose Jordan, an industry CPA, wants to improve the monthly variance explanation and has separately identified an outstanding ethics requirement. The two fictional options below illustrate the decision process; they are not Learnsignal courses or credit offers.
| Question | Option A: variance analysis workshop | Option B: professional ethics programme |
|---|---|---|
| Work relevance | Strong match for the reporting task | Different learning objective |
| Outstanding ethics requirement | Does not address it | Potential match, subject to the board's specific conditions |
| Missing information | CPE award and prerequisites | Applicable state approval and completion terms |
| Next step | Ask for the missing course details | Verify eligibility before purchasing |
Jordan should not select Option A as a substitute for ethics merely because it seems more useful this month. Nor should Jordan assume Option B resolves the requirement because “ethics” appears in the title. The best outcome may be two separate choices, scheduled and budgeted for different purposes.
Check the full cost of finishing
Compare the total payable and the access you will actually use. For a subscription, establish whether the selected course is included and whether your planned completion date falls within access. For an individual purchase, check what happens if you need more time. Ask about assessment attempts, materials or certificate-related charges if the offer leaves them unclear.
Budget time as well as money. Reading, exercises and assessments may require time beyond watching lessons. Put a realistic study appointment in your calendar, with space to revisit difficult material. Do not treat advertised credits as a promise about how quickly you personally will finish.
Make and keep the decision
Before paying, resolve the checklist items that affect eligibility, completion or cost. Save the course description and relevant confirmation. After successful completion, add the actual award and evidence to your CPE tracking log; an intended purchase is not earned credit.
