ACCA in Senegal and West Africa: A Guide for Francophone Finance Professionals
How ACCA is growing in Senegal and across Francophone West Africa and how local finance professionals can qualify.
ACCA in Francophone West Africa
Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and other Francophone West African countries have traditionally used the OHADA accounting framework (Organisation pour l'Harmonisation en Afrique du Droit des Affaires) and the SYSCOHADA accounting system. However, as IFRS adoption expands across the region and multinational investment increases, ACCA has been growing steadily as the qualification of choice for professionals targeting international careers.
ACCA in Dakar
Dakar is the economic capital of Senegal and a significant regional hub for finance and professional services. The Big 4 firms all have Dakar offices. International organisations including the World Bank, BOAD (West African Development Bank), and ECOWAS institutions employ finance professionals, and ACCA is increasingly recognised alongside regional qualifications.
Language Considerations
ACCA examinations are conducted in English. For Francophone professionals, strong English language skills are a prerequisite — but also a significant career asset. Many ACCA members in Francophone Africa find that the combination of French, English, and an internationally recognised qualification makes them highly competitive for regional and international roles.
Emerging Opportunities
Senegal's discovery of significant offshore oil and gas reserves (production beginning 2024) is creating new finance opportunities in the extractive industries. Finance professionals with ACCA qualification and knowledge of IFRS 6 (exploration accounting) and project finance are well positioned for roles with international energy companies entering the Senegalese market.
