What is AAT Tax Processes for Businesses (TPFB)?

Tax Processes for Businesses (TPFB) is a mandatory unit in the AAT Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Accounting. It introduces two key areas of business taxation — VAT and payroll — that are central to the day-to-day work of accounting technicians in practice and industry.

TPFB Syllabus Overview

  • VAT principles — taxable and exempt supplies, standard-rated, zero-rated, and reduced-rate VAT; registration thresholds
  • VAT records and returns — maintaining VAT records, completing a VAT return, submitting via Making Tax Digital
  • VAT schemes — standard accounting, cash accounting scheme, flat rate scheme, annual accounting scheme
  • Payroll fundamentals — gross pay calculations, statutory deductions, pension contributions
  • PAYE and national insurance — how PAYE works, NI thresholds, employer and employee NI contributions

Exam Format

TPFB is assessed by an on-demand computer-based assessment with a mix of calculation questions and knowledge-based tasks on VAT rules and payroll procedures.

Key Topics to Master

VAT Schemes

Students frequently confuse the four VAT schemes. The cash accounting scheme is useful for businesses with slow-paying customers (VAT only paid when cash is received). The flat rate scheme simplifies VAT for small businesses. The annual accounting scheme allows one annual return. Know the eligibility thresholds and advantages of each.

VAT Returns

Know exactly what goes in each box of the VAT return — this is tested directly. Box 1 is VAT on sales; Box 4 is VAT reclaimed on purchases; Box 5 is the net payment or refund.

Payroll

Understand how to calculate net pay from gross pay, including tax, national insurance, and pension deductions. Know the difference between employer and employee NI contributions.

Study Tips for TPFB

  • Memorise the VAT scheme thresholds and key features — these are tested directly
  • Work through complete VAT return questions including partial exemption scenarios
  • Use HMRC's guidance on Making Tax Digital to understand the current filing requirements
