Overview

ACCA Advanced Taxation

Advanced Taxation (ATX) is one of four optional papers at the ACCA Strategic Professional level. It builds on the tax knowledge and skills gained in Taxation (TX), developing students' ability to advise on complex tax situations involving multiple taxes, cross-border considerations, and advanced planning opportunities.

The paper covers advanced aspects of the taxes studied in TX, including overseas aspects, trusts, and additional reliefs. It extends into stamp taxes and requires students to evaluate the tax implications of alternative courses of action, advise on minimising tax liabilities through legitimate planning, and address the ethical and professional issues arising from tax advisory work.

ATX is examined in country-specific variants reflecting different jurisdictions' tax systems. The exam requires students to demonstrate the ability to think like a senior tax adviser, identifying issues, evaluating options, and providing practical recommendations in a professional manner.

What You'll Learn

  • Apply advanced knowledge of the UK tax system across all major taxes
  • Evaluate the tax impact of different situations and courses of action
  • Advise on tax-efficient strategies for individuals and businesses
  • Apply ethical and professional judgement to tax advisory situations
  • Calculate complex tax liabilities involving multiple taxes and interactions
  • Advise on stamp taxes and their interaction with other taxes

Career Relevance

ATX is the paper of choice for students pursuing careers in tax advisory, tax consulting, and corporate tax. It prepares you for senior roles such as Tax Manager, Senior Tax Adviser, Tax Director, and Tax Partner in accounting firms and corporate tax departments.

Exam Tips

Your Guide To Pass ACCA ATX-UK

Expert tips from our tutors to help you prepare effectively and pass your ATX-UK exam on the first attempt.

Think Multi-Tax

ATX often tests the interaction between different taxes. When advising on a scenario, consider income tax, CGT, IHT, corporation tax, and stamp taxes together — not in isolation.

Advise, Don't Just Calculate

ATX rewards advisory skills. After computing the tax position, explain the implications and recommend actions. The best answers provide practical, client-focused advice.

Know the Reliefs Thoroughly

Advanced tax reliefs and exemptions are central to ATX. Understand when Business Asset Disposal Relief, holdover relief, gift relief, and other key reliefs apply and their conditions.

Study the Correct Tax Year

ATX is examined on specific tax legislation. Always check which tax year applies to your exam session and study the corresponding rates, allowances, and rules.

Address Ethics

Tax planning ethics questions appear regularly. Understand the boundaries between legitimate tax planning, tax avoidance, and tax evasion, and be able to advise professionally on these matters.
