Overview

ACCA Advanced Performance Management

Advanced Performance Management (APM) is one of four optional papers at the ACCA Strategic Professional level. It builds on the knowledge and techniques gained in Performance Management (PM), taking them to a strategic level where students must evaluate and advise on performance management systems and techniques in complex business environments.

The paper covers strategic planning and control, performance management information systems and developments in technology (including data analytics and AI), strategic performance measurement in both private and not-for-profit sectors, divisional performance and transfer pricing issues, and performance evaluation using alternative frameworks.

APM requires students to apply strategic-level thinking, evaluating performance management approaches rather than simply applying techniques. Questions are scenario-based and require critical evaluation, professional judgement, and the ability to advise senior management on performance-related decisions.

What You'll Learn

  • Apply strategic management accounting concepts to organisational performance
  • Evaluate performance management information systems and technology developments
  • Assess strategic performance measures for different organisational types
  • Evaluate divisional performance and transfer pricing issues
  • Apply alternative performance measurement and management frameworks
  • Assess performance in complex business structures

Career Relevance

APM prepares you for senior roles in management accounting, financial planning and analysis (FP&A), performance consulting, and business intelligence. These skills are valued in roles such as Head of FP&A, Performance Director, Management Accounting Director, and Chief Performance Officer.

Exam Tips

Your Guide To Pass ACCA APM

Expert tips from our tutors to help you prepare effectively and pass your APM exam on the first attempt.

Think Strategically

APM requires strategic-level analysis, not just technique application. Evaluate the appropriateness of performance measures and systems for the specific organisation described in the scenario.

Apply to the Scenario

Every answer should be tailored to the specific organisation, industry, and circumstances in the question. Generic answers about performance management frameworks score poorly.

Understand Data Analytics

The role of technology, data analytics, and AI in performance management is increasingly examined. Understand how these tools support better decision making and performance measurement.

Evaluate, Don't Just Describe

APM rewards critical evaluation. Don't just describe a performance measure or system — assess its strengths, weaknesses, and suitability for the organisation.

Cover Not-for-Profit

Performance measurement in not-for-profit and public sector organisations is regularly tested. Understand the different objectives, measures, and challenges compared to the private sector.
